Many thanks to the members that came along to help with the tree clearance.
It became apparent early on the job was going to be more complicated than first planned.
The Telehandler arm could not reach the tree so the boat was required to ferry the ‘cutters’ out to the island the tree straddled.
A rope was then ferried back and forth allowing the Telehandler to drag the large limbs and trunk sections across the channel.
As work progressed the idea the tree was a single or double trunk with limbs coming off was dispelled, the tree was a multi trunk beast.
Some big limbs were underwater and attempts to reach an above ground section to cut and remove them partially worked. Limbs with side branches are still under water on the pegs 8 and 7 and could not be removed. Some parts are above water to show where they are, beware.
After 6 hours and over 50 man hours several tonnes of wood was removed and the tree was taken back as far as possible.
The clear up of the debris will happen on another day, the cutting team were ‘very tired’ after a long day chain sawing.
Many thanks go to Dave Slack the Telehandler driver, from Bradshaw, without whom we could not have done any of the work.
Next Refuge job – repair 100yds of roadway, watch out for a call for volunteers for this job.
