The heavy flooding of the Christmas and New Year period had thankfully dropped after a week of dryer weather. Levels of 6 feet above normal were recorded for the River Nene in the first week of January. Whilst flow rates were still high it would be the first chance in a long while for the club to fish this stretch.
Twenty two anglers would be competing in the second round of the Deeping Individual League Series. A points based competition spread over five rounds. They also would be competing in the first round of the Dawkins River Cup. Fished over two rounds for best overall weight.
Winner on the day was Ray Torrington 8lbs 13oz from Peg 19. Ray took advantage of the slight slack water on the bend fishing a 5m whip using double pinkie on the hook.
Alan Thomas and Pete Wray shared second place with the same weight of 7lbs 13oz. Alan and Pete fished from pegs 18 & 20 up and down stream of the winner. Alan found double red on the 7m whip as the best option, whilst Pete fished the pole with 5 or 6 sections using Fluro maggots and feeding hemp.
Section Wins for Ron Needham, Paul Barron, Paul Dotchin and David Marzell.
