As another season draws to a close the Club’s Horseshoe lake hosted the final match. A little twist on things for this one though, with “Silvers Only” as the target. Fourteen anglers would be trying to avoid the lake’s carp population. The temperature had dropped in the past 48 hours, would the silver fish population appear in any numbers ?.
The weather forecast was for dry and bright conditions, but with a very cold and gusty wind.
Lots at stake today in terms of club competitions. It was the fifth and final round of the Deeping Individual League Series (DILS). A final chance to earn points for this season’s Club Champion. Also, a final chance to improve on the overall weight for the season’s Billing Cup. Plus, this is the opportunity for angler’s to get their name on the Non Cup Winners Cup!
Heading into the final round of DILS any one of six anglers could take the win. With anglers using the best points accumulations of any four rounds of the five fished.
A match win for Ray Torrington sealed the DILS trophy with just a single point advantage over last year’s winner Antony Johnson. Ray won the match with 6lb 13oz from Peg number 6. Ray fished bread punch over liquidised bread, as well as maggot over expanders on the pole at top 2 plus 2.
Ray’s win also cemented his place at the top of the Club Champion League with a gap of 28 points to Jason Chatham in second place.
Nathan Grech had a commanding lead in the Billing cup, and was still 40lb ahead of Ray on the last day, despite Nathan not fishing a single Winter league match. Ray only managing to close the gap by nearly 7lbs wasn’t enough and Nathan wins the Billing Cup for 2023-24.
Second place on the day for Paul Dotchin with 5lb 14oz from Peg number 33. Paul fished red maggot on the cage feeder and pole at top 2 plus 1. Paul’s catch included 3 Skimmers and won him the Non Cup Winners Cup .
Third place to Alan Thomas with 5lbs from peg number 9. Alan fished double red maggot over ground bait and micros on the pole at 13m.
