High hopes for today on the club’s Sibson stretch of the river Nene. The river levels at last remained steady for a few weeks, the flow rate slowing to normal and the water colour starting to clear. A mild few days preceded, but the possibility of blustery conditions for today’s match. Pleasure anglers have been recording high double figure nets, with the notable lack of both Bleak and Pike.
Twenty four anglers would be competing in the third round of the Deeping Individual League Series. A points based competition spread over five rounds. They also would be competing in the second round of the Dawkins River Cup. Fished over two rounds for best overall weight.
Antony Johnson was today’s winner with 13lbs 1oz from peg number 16. Antony started off on the 5m whip over ground bait and pinkie. He switched to a 3m whip and targeted the Bleak that showed up in numbers for the first time in weeks.
Second place on the day was Andy Wilson with an excellent 10lbs 1oz from the low numbered section on peg 4. Andy fished the 5m whip using a running flat float on bronze maggot. Loose feeding maggots after realising the fish had backed off.
Third place went to Ray Torrington with 8lbs 7oz from peg number 18. Fishing the 5m and 6m whip, Ray used single maggot over Hemp and ground bait.
Section Wins for: Steve Borrett, Derek Drover, Dave Preston and Colin Fisher.
It was noticeable on the day that the Pike and Bleak had turned up in numbers due to the clearer water conditions. The fish had spread themselves both up and down stream. Only 2 anglers did not weigh with over 119lbs of Roach, Dace, Bleak, Perch and a few nice Chub.
The next name on the Dawkins cup for 2023/2024 season will be Ray Torrington. Ray finished with 17lb 4 oz over the 2 rounds winning by a margin of 3lb 6oz.
