Final visit of the 2022/23 season to flowing water. And it was the in form River Nene at Sibson chosen to host the 18 club anglers. However, with the current cold spell were the fish going to be present along the whole stretch ?
In the penultimate Club day of the season the anglers would be competing in Round 4 of The Deeping Individual League Series (DILS). DILS is based over 5 club days and is awarded to the angler with the best points total from four of the five matches.
Also today, they would be fishing for The Several Fisheries Trophy. A Club cup normally fished on the River Welland and recognises the Club taking single ownership of the river. Back then nearly all club matches were fished on the River Welland through the Deepings, this stretch being known as the Several Fishery, because several people, 20 in all, owned one share each. Dividends came from day tickets sold on the water by the then bailiff Jonny Robinson. During the 1960s, club chairman at the time, Jim Measures, began buying up these shares on behalf of the club, the result being that the Several Fishery, and ownership of the fishing rights, became part of Deeping St James Angling Club.
Antony Johnson finished in First place with 14lb 5oz from Peg number 15. Antony started his match on the whip at 5m fishing over a heavily ground baited line on the bottom and saw good sized Skimmers in his first few runs through. However, this line quickly died and he switched tactic to target the abundance of Bleak in front of him at 3 metres. An estimated 600 fish was the result of that switch fishing in a pink slop with white maggot on the Hook.
Second Place went to Alf Kendall with 6lbs 9oz from Peg number 14. Alf had spotted the fish on the far bank between the boats and fished a double red maggot on Waggler. Feeding maggot and hemp saw him take a few nice stamp of Rudd.
Third Place to Jason Chatham with 5lbs 1oz from Peg number 11. With nothing to show for the first hour, introducing a small ball of ground bait with each put in resulted in the Dace showing up on the 5m Line. Fishing over depth and holding back on the whip using Red and white maggots on the hook.
Section Wins for Mel Saggers, Derek Drover and by the luck of the Draw bag Alan Thomas.
Special thanks to Karen Lennon for supplying the Club with a much needed new Draw Bag. Unfortunately it was not kind to everyone and with the fish not showing it resulted in a high number of anglers blanking!
