Big turnout at the first Club Day of the new year. Seventeen anglers turned up at the Sibson stretch of the River Nene. Unfortunately the river had risen rapidly overnight, so Plan B was quickly put into place. That saw a quick drive over the A1 to Stibbington and onto the Fish Refuge.
Blustery conditions and a spot of gardening for a few anglers to clear their peg. Those big floats and deep rigs, quickly swapped for lighter and shallower ones.
Anglers today would be competing in the second round of the Deeping Individual League series (DILS). DILS is based over 5 club days and is awarded to the angler with the best points total from four of the five matches.
Also, The Dave Dawkins River Cup, which is a brand new trophy to be fished for the very first time this year. In honour of the late Dave Dawkins, a club bailiff for many years around the Crowland area. The trophy will be fished over 2 rounds with the highest combined weight from the 2 rounds.
Antony Johnson fished Peg 5 for the third match in succession and made the most of the “bowl” on the refuge. Finishing in top spot with an impressive weight of 10lb 6oz. Antony fished the 4 metre whip using single maggot into a cloud of sloppy ground bait mix. The total count of around 460 fish made up mostly of Bleak.
Second place to Dave Marzell also fishing the “bowl” from peg number 7. Dave weighed in 4lb 8oz fishing on bread punch.
Third place to Ian Benton, yes you guessed it, also from the “bowl” but from peg number 3. Ian used his pole at 6 sections with maggot over ground bait to end up with 4lb 5 oz.
